The Hay Creek Festival returns to Joanna Furnace Ironworks in Robeson Township Sept. 8-10. The event offers visitors a glimpse at what a day in the 19th century Joanna Furnace community would have looked like.

The 47th annual event is held on the grounds of an 18th- and 19th-century charcoal fueled iron furnace and community. The interpretation timeline runs from the beginning of the furnace in 1791 up to the 1950s.

The exhibits and demonstrations include traditional early American crafts, a contemporary craft market, living history presentations and interpretations, Industrial Revolution-era working equipment, threshing demonstrations, a working sawmill, children’s activities, a traditional four-square kitchen herb garden, Civil War and World War II encampments, antique vehicles, steam engines and tractors, traditional folk music presentations, homemade festive foods and more.

The festival runs each day from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Parking is free on the festival grounds on Friday. Free shuttle buses will be provided from an offsite parking area from 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

Admission is $10 for adults, $2 for children ages 6 to 12 and free for children 5 and younger. The Hay Creek Valley Historical Association’s Joanna Furnace site is located 3 miles north of Morgantown on Route 10. For more information, visit www.haycreek.org.

The LGBT Center of Greater Reading and Berks Community Health Center are bringing Wellness on Wheels to the LGBT Center on 8/30/23 between 9-3. The RV will be parked on Centre Avenue in front of Calvary UCC, 640 Centre Ave., Reading.

The Daniel Boone Homestead Associates Fall Lecture Series takes place at 2 p.m. Sundays, Sept. 10 and Nov. 12 at the Exeter Township historic site.

In the Sept. 10 lecture, historian and author Michael Harris explores the history of the 1777 Philadelphia Campaign. British commander William Howe believed capturing the city would end the American Revolution. Brandywine, Paoli, Germantown, Fort Mercer, Fort Mifflin and Whitemarsh. The campaign ended when George Washington’s army entered Valley Forge in December.

In the Nov. 12 program, Paul Trainor will discuss Colonial medicine, the traveling apothecary and the important role of the military surgeon.

The lectures will take place in the DeTurk Education Center. Admission is a $2/person suggested donation. Please no pets and no smoking.

The Muhlenberg Community Library is holding a fundraiser with psychic medium Nellie Walter on Tuesday, Sept. 5, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the Muhlenberg Recreation Building, 3025 River Road.

The Jewish Federation of Reading/Berks in partnership with the Greater Reading Unity Coalition announces Diversity Night at the Reading Fightin’ Phils game vs. the New Hampshire Fisher Cats on Sunday at FirstEnergy Stadium. Gates open at 4 p.m.

A limited number of free, general admission tickets are available at the main branch of the Reading Public Library, Wyomissing Library, Exeter Community Library and Sinking Spring Public Library.

The Greater Reading Unity Coalition includes the Jewish Federation, the Reading Branch of the NAACP, Centro Hispano, Islamic Center of Reading, LGBT Center of Greater Reading and Bring the Change. Each organization will have a table set up before and during the game for the community to learn about their work.

The LGBT Center of Greater Reading is holding its annual Dance Through the Decades Fundraising Gala – MARDI GRAS Style on Sept. 16 from 5 to 10 p.m at the DoubleTree by Hilton, Reading.

The evening includes Mardi Gras-themed appetizers, food, drinks, jazz entertainers, circus performers, a silent auction, awards ceremony and dancing to music by Red Tie Affairs.

The Mohnton Cumru Lions Club is hosting its third annual Berks Blues & BBQ on Saturday, Sept. 9. Blues bands will be performing from 1 to 7 p.m. in Mohnton Memorial Park. A competitive pay-to-play Cornhole Tournament with cash prizes will be held for adults.

Food, beer and wine will be served all day. Children 17 and under are admitted free and can enjoy the Magic in Mohnton playground.

Daniel Boone Homestead Associates has scheduled its second annual Trails of History 5K/10K & ½ -Mile Fun Run/Walk for Sunday, Oct. 8, at 9 a.m. Runners do one or two 5K loops around the Exeter Township property. The fun run/walk for all ages starts at 10:15 at the Craft Shed.

Registration begins at 7:30 at the DeTurk Education Center, where the race will start and finish. Participants are to park in the DeTurk Education Center lot and the Wayside Lodge lot.

In addition to awards for top finishers in various age groups, a special award will be given for best dressed entrant displaying the era of the mid-1700s.
